In this article we explore how female sympathy and solidarity can be forged between transnational subjects and spectators. In particular, we place cinematic depictions of minority female suffering in the contexts of current feminist and postcolonial praxes. The aim is to demonstrate the ways in which world cinema can produce a transnational feminist solidarity through forms and narratives that reflect the experiences of women as gendered postcolonial subjects. Amongst the female and feminist theorists drawn upon, central to our understanding of (...) a transnational feminist solidarity is Sandra Lee Bartky's ‘mitgefühl’. From this understanding we suggest bonds of sympathetic solidarity between audiences and diegetic female subjects that bridge their ontological separation, without conflating the two, in relation to Rachida and Frontière. In combining film-philosophy, cinematic affect and feminist theory we formulate a radically new way of understanding and envisioning the construction of female suffering onscreen: as a means of producing transnational forms of spectator solidarity. This paper contains a short outline of the rationale behind a workshop aimed at seeking connections between corporate social responsibility and corporate political activity. Two ‘provocateurs’ gave their view on these connections. After this kick-off two groups of ~10 persons each engaged in lively discussions on these connections, identifying a range of issues for further research and an interest in keeping this issue on the agenda.

Background Maternal mental health during the peripartum period is critically important to the wellbeing of mothers and their infants. Numerous studies and clinical trials have focused on various aspects of interventions and treatments for perinatal mental health from the perspective of researchers and medical health professionals. However, less is known about women’s experiences of participating in perinatal mental health research, and the ethical issues that arise. Aim To systematically review the literature on the ethical issues that emerge from pregnant and/or (...) postpartum women’s experiences of taking part in perinatal mental health-related research. Methods Systematic review of nine bibliographic databases, from inception to July 2021. Qualitative, quantitative and mixed method studies were included if they reported on ethical issues experienced by perinatal women. Research ethical issues encompassed any issue relating to women’s experiences of being offered study information, recruitment, consent, retention and respect for autonomy. Titles, abstracts and full text screening, appraisal of the methodological quality of included studies, and data extraction, were conducted independently by two reviewers. Ethical considerations Ethical approval was not required for this systematic review. Findings A total of 9830 unique citations was retrieved. Six studies met the inclusion criteria. Studies were clinically and methodologically heterogenous, and only one was purposively designed to explore women’s experiences. The key finding was the establishment of trust between the researcher and participant in all stages of the research process. Findings are presented according to recruitment and consent processes, participation and retention, and study follow-up and completion. Conclusion The establishment of trust between the researcher and perinatal women leads to a dynamic with research ethical implications relevant to all stages of perinatal mental health-related research. Further research on the research ethical issues experienced by perinatal women is required because of the limited literature. (shrink)

This paper responds to the commentaries from Stacy Carter and Alan Cribb. We pick up on two main themes in our response. First, we reflect on how the process of setting standards for empirical bioethics research entails drawing boundaries around what research counts as empirical bioethics research, and we discuss whether the standards agreed in the consensus process draw these boundaries correctly. Second, we expand on the discussion in the original paper of the role and significance of the concept of (...) ‘integrating’ empirical methods and ethical argument as a standard for research practice within empirical bioethics. This Special Issue commemorates the 60th anniversary of Business & Society with nine rigorous literature reviews that address important societal problems and provide opportunities for theory development in the business and society field; in this introduction we present an overview of the Special Issue. With the theme “Building on Its Past,” the nine articles address a host of contemporary issues, including climate change, wicked problems, business and human rights, human health, certifications standards, the governance of artificial intelligence, stakeholder engagement, stakeholder (...) theory, and corporate political activity. Together, these reviews offer a wealth of suggested themes, theories and approaches that can drive our research forward for the next decades in business and society research and practice. Using the lens of a miner-prospector continuum to categorize the diversity of articles within this special issue, a common theme emerges across the portfolio of reviews: they all call for a more systemic and integrative perspective toward studying the complex interactions that link business and society actors and issues. Building on these findings, we encourage future scholars to fill long-standing researched gaps through a more open systems approach, which supports both contextually sensitive and multi-level and multi-disciplinary approaches to address grand societal challenges. We conclude with specific suggestions as to how business and society scholars might use an open systems approach, including embracing methodologies to address complex causal pathways, theorizing with a view towards spanning external and internal elements of an organization, and reflecting on the temporal and spatial dynamics of complex systems. Les auteurs de cet article interrogent le meurtre conjugal à la lumière de la psychologie clinique, selon le référentiel psychanalytique. À partir d’un cas clinique, ils montrent en quoi la scène conjugale apparaît comme un autre lieu de répétition de l’expérience traumatique. Plus précisément, ils discutent l’hypothèse selon laquelle la violence et le meurtre conjugal constituent une tentative de réappropriation subjective des expériences traumatiques familiales. Les résultats de leur analyse permettent de confirmer cette hypothèse et d’apporter de nouvelles pistes de (...) réflexion pour la recherche. (shrink)

The majority of healthcare professionals regularly witness fragility, suffering, pain and death in their professional lives. Such experiences may increase the risk of burnout and compassion fatigue, especially if they are without self-awareness and a healthy work environment. Acquiring a deeper understanding of vulnerability inherent to their professional work will be of crucial importance to face these risks. From a relational ethics perspective, the role of the team is critical in the development of professional values which can help to cope (...) with the inherent vulnerability of healthcare professionals. The focus of this paper is the role of Communities of Practice as a source of resilience, since they can create a reflective space for recognising and sharing their experiences of vulnerability that arises as part of their work. This shared knowledge can be a source of strength while simultaneously increasing the confidence and resilience of the healthcare team. (shrink)

Die henologische Metaphysik ist das Herzstück der Philosophie Plotins. Als Neuplatoniker vertritt Plotin emphatisch die strikte Transzendenz des (über)göttlichen Einen. Das höchste Prinzip, das nach plotinischem Verständnis "jenseits von allem" steht, kann weder denkend noch sprachlich erfasst werden, sondern ist "wahrhaft unsagbar". Dennoch spricht Plotin in nahezu jeder seiner 54 Schriften über das Eine und gebraucht dabei eine Vielfalt von Aussageformen - Negationen, Analogien und vereinzelt auch positive Zuschreibungen. Diese Spannung verlangt nach einer Erklärung. Benedikt Krämer unternimmt in seiner Dissertation (...) erstmals in monographischer Form eine umfassende Untersuchung der verschiedenen theologischen Sprechweisen aus historischer und systematischer Perspektive. In einem ersten Schritt wird die Entwicklung der theologischen Sprechweisen in der mittelplatonischen Philosophie ausgehend von ihren Anknüpfungspunkten in Platons Schriften betrachtet. Anschließend erfolgt die Untersuchung der theologischen Formen in Plotins Enneaden. Dabei wird zum einen geklärt, wie Plotin die Sprechweisen, die sich im Mittelplatonismus vor dem Hintergrund einer????-Theologie entwickeln, für seine henologische Metaphysik adaptiert. Zum anderen wird die Funktion der verschiedenen theologischen Formen im Rahmen plotinischen Philosophierens beleuchtet. (shrink)

Esta crítica se basa en datos neurobiologicos sobre los sentidos que apuntan a que estos no parecen describir caracteristicas objetivas del mundo, sino que actuan de forma ʼnarcisita', es decir, representan informacion en funcion de los intereses concretos del organismo.El articulo se encuentra también en: Bechtel, et al., Philosophy and the Neuroscience.

Resumen: Este texto es un estudio sobre el consumo de invertebrados marinos y de agua dulce en el sudoeste de Francia desde los principios del siglo XVI hasta el día de hoy. Toma en cuenta alrededor de 100 especies: bivalvos, incluso mejillones de agua dulce; gasterópodas; cefalópodas; crustáceas, incluso cangrejos de río; erizos y anémonas de mar. El artículo propone una historia tan detallada como sea posible de cada especie o grupo de especies cercanas; evoca las evoluciones de sus representaciones (...) sociales, de sus valorizaciones comerciales, de sus preparaciones culinarias, etc. Con su importante litoral sobre el Golfo de Vizcaya y sus ciudades ubicadas tierra adentro, el sudoeste de Francia constituye un área de estudio interesante para pensar la complejidad de los hábitos de consumo de mariscos durante el periodo anterior al desarrollo de los transportes rápidos y a la invención del frio artificial.: This text is a study on the consumption of marine and freshwater invertebrates in Southwest France from the early 16thcentury to the present day. Around 100 species are taken into account: bivalves including river mussels; gastropods; cephalopods; crustaceans including crayfishes; urchins and sea anemones. The article proposes a history as detailed as possible of each species or group of closely related species, including the evolution of their social representations, commercial valuations, culinary preparations, etc. With its important coastline on the Gulf of Gascony and its inland cities, Southwest France forms an interesting study area to think about the complexity of seafood consumption patterns in the era before the development of rapid transports and the invention of artificial refrigeration. Mein Beitrag versteht den Werkbegriff nicht nur als ästhetischen, sondern auch als epistemischen Grundbegriff. Ausgehend von einem nachgelassenen Fragment Friedrich Nietzsches, das Eingang in Der Wille zur Macht – einen Text mit prekärem Werkstatus – gefunden hat, wird in drei Schritten argumentiert: (1) Der Werkbegriff ist an verschiedenen Prozeduren in den Geisteswissenschaften beteiligt und bleibt auch dann erhalten, wenn ein werkästhetischer Werkbegriff abgelehnt wird. (2) Innerhalb dieser Prozeduren kommt dem Werkbegriff eine gemeinsame Funktion zu. Sie besteht in der Konstitution epistemischer (...) Dinge. Die Ähnlichkeit der Prozeduren des Werkbegriffs in den Geisteswissenschaften kann mit dieser Beschreibung auch über methodische und disziplinäre Grenzen hinweg beschrieben werden. (3) Der Wille zur Macht wird auch für kulturelle bzw. kulturökonomische Zwecke in Dienst genommen. Der Werkbegriff ist ein Grenzbegriff über die Wissenschaft hinaus. Er bildet boundary objects. The article seeks to summarise recent research carried out by the author into thirteenth and fourteenth-century commentaries on the De longitudine et brevitate vitae. The texts of some representative commentaries are examined as a means of assessing the reception of Aristotle's natural philosophy in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. As this is an area which has received comparatively little attention from researchers up to now, it is hoped that in examining commentaries on this one text of the Parva naturalia what (...) emerges might serve to give a clearer picture of the reception and understanding of Aristotle's natural philosophy. The article also contains some brief comments on the two medieval translations of the De longitudine, by James of Venice and William of Moerbeke. In an appendix, a transcription of the prologue to Walter Burley's commentary is also included. (shrink)

Premièrement, la théorie esthétique de Croce est fondée sur la perception sensible en tant que forme particulière de connaissance. Deuxièmement, en mettant l’accent sur les actes de production et de perception, l’esthétique de l’intuition de Croce doit être comprise comme une esthétique de la présence. Examining the lives and works of three iconic personalities —Germaine de Staël, Stendhal, and Georges Cuvier—Kathleen Kete creates a groundbreaking cultural history of ambition in post-Revolutionary France. While in the old regime the traditionalist view of ambition prevailed—that is, ambition as morally wrong unless subsumed into a corporate whole—the new regime was marked by a rising tide of competitive individualism. Greater opportunities for personal advancement, however, were shadowed by lingering doubts about the moral value of ambition. Kete identifies three (...) strategies used to overcome the ethical “burden” of ambition: romantic genius, secular vocation, and post-mythic destiny. In each case, success would seem to be driven by forces outside one’s control. She concludes by examining the still relevant conundrum of the relationship of individual desires to community needs, which she identifies as a defining characteristic of the modern world. (shrink)

Stehen sich Kants Ethik und die mit Edmund Husserl beginnende phänomenologische Bewegung tatsächlich in Form eines Antagonismus gegenüber? Noch immer wird diese Frage nicht selten bejaht. Die Hypothese der vorliegenden Studie ist jedoch, dass die Behauptung eines solchen Antagonismus letztlich weder aus der Perspektive der kantischen Schriften noch aus der Entwicklungsgeschichte der Phänomenologie heraus aufrecht erhalten werden kann. Denn gibt es nicht in Kants Ethik und ihrer Grundlegung Perspektiven, die den Vorwurf des abstrakten, lebensfernen Formalismus bereits entkräften? Und findet sich (...) im Nachgang zu den materialen Wertethikern nicht innerhalb der phänomenologischen Bewegung der Versuch einer Erneuerung gerade der formalistischen Tendenz der kantischen Ethik? Die systematische Perspektive, die aus dieser Untersuchung hervorgeht, ist eine Ethik des Begehrens der reinen praktischen Vernunft, in der sich das individuelle Begehren angesichts einer gebietenden Vernunft auf je eigenem Wege konkretisiert, einer reinen praktischen Vernunft, deren Aufkommen allerdings mit Levinas als genuin intersubjektiv verstanden wird.
